Title: Long-Term Unemployment and Retirement in Early-Twentieth-Century America

Citation Type: Journal Article

Publication Year: 1998

Abstract: Presents a statistical analysis of newly available data to achieve a better understanding of the relationship between long-term unemployment among elderly workers and retirement. Such an understanding is necessary to resolve conflicting claims about the labor force participation rate of males over 65 between 1870 and 1937. Clear changes in the working lives of older men occurred in the late 19th century; participation rates for this group showed a clear downward trend between 1880 and 1940.
