Abstract: Traditionally, Labor Force Surveys and Household Surveys have been used to gather information on the time individuals devote to paid work (e.g., labor-force statistics), unpaid work, and childcare. However, in recent decades Time Use Surveys have been developed, with the support of National Statistical Offices, as an instrument aimed at measuring the time-allocation decisions of individuals, and they have proven to be a superior instrument in terms of accuracy and reliability, which has led to many developed and developing countries using them. This chapter reviews the main characteristics of Time Use Surveys, with a summary of their history, technical questions regarding sample frames, activities, and complementary information, and harmonization projects.
