Abstract: We examine one of the secondary effects of the granting of Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) to China in October 2000: lower than expected house price appreciation. We consider housing prices for 2,800 US counties in a panel data setting for the years 1990 to 2020. We and that the 2000 PNTR trade event caused house prices to appreciate 6 to 8 percent less in highly trade-exposed counties within 2 to 3 years of the trade event and that the slower appreciation persisted to 2020. The size of the trade impact is highly robust to various sensitivity checks.
