Abstract: . . . for growing up exists that is culturally prescribed but flexible enough tot take account of economic and demographic vicissitudes. Individuals learn this timetable both by watching what others do and by taking cues from institutions that are gatekeepers of the life course (Heinz 2001). The fluidity of the timing and sequence of the life course suggests that institutions and actors operate in a contingent fashion -- forming provisional norms that may be altered under certain conditions.
