Abstract: We use American Community Survey data extracted from the IPUMS system to develop a database of household partners and then analyze the impact of individual and partner employment types on the probability of a birth in the last 12 months. Using a variety of controls for both individual and partner we find that when the individual (woman) is self employed, partnerships have lower fertility rates regardless of the employment classification of the partner when compared to the situation of individual and partner both wage-employed.
