Abstract: After two decades in the economic doldrums, the U.S. economy revived strongly in the late 1990s, as the rate of productivity growth doubled. Although continued rapid growth during the next several decades is certainly possible, it is not assured-and the staked are enormous. This chapter outlines that is known about the sources of U.S. economic growth and describes steps that policymakers-public and private-can take to realize the potential for growth.
