Abstract: This paper analyzes the influence of business cycles in childhood on economic performance later in life. First, I relate unemployment rates between the year before one’s birth and the year of one’s fifteenth birthday to schooling, employment, and income as an adult. Next, I study how the background characteristics of parents raising children vary with the state of the macroeconomy. Finally, I document the impact of economic fluctuations on home environments and parenting behaviors. The average unemployment rate in childhood normally has a negative effect on parental investments in offspring and the stock of human capital in adulthood.
