Abstract: We use the National Agricultural Worker Survey to investigate how recession generally, and the 2008-09 Great Recession particularly, affected the U.S. agricultural labor market. Our results suggest that hourly wages and fringe benefits became higher during the Great Recession in contrast to previous recessions (and comparison industries), though increases were less for unauthorized immigrants. We also find that weekly hours for unauthorized workers and wage dispersion significantly increased during the Great Recession and relate our findings to a decrease in immigrant labor supply and a low price elasticity of agricultural commodities, and discuss implications for recent agricultural labor policy proposals.
