Abstract: Men make history, but not as they please. In his research on American education, the historian Lawrence Cremin crafted a narrative on US education and how it was influenced by historical events. It was a monumental task for which Cremin were amply rewarded. As an historian Cremin knew that historical events played a critical role in the development and shaping of institutions. The US educational system was one such institution. The present volume addresses a simple conjecture that emanates from Cemin’s research: the impact of historical events in American history that have shaped the demography of the US student population––directly or indirectly.
