Abstract: This dissertation is quantitative in its orientation and utilizes multilevel analysis as well as geographic maps and descriptive tables to explore how the intersection of race and gender functioned to create the economic disadvantage experienced by black women over the course of a century. The data for this analysis is drawn from the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS).
