Title: Does Inequality Increase Crime? The Effect of Income Inequality on Crime Rates in California Counties

Citation Type: Miscellaneous

Publication Year: 2014

Abstract: This article estimates the effect of county level income inequality on violent and property crime rates using data on eight years of data on California counties. Initial cross-sectional analysis suggests income inequality decreases most categories of crime. However, the impact of income inequality on all crime categories is statistically significant using a well structured panel data estimation.
