Abstract: The relationships between womens empowerment and tobacco use have not been thoroughly explored, particularly in developing settings. Using data from IPUMS-DHS, we categorized capability-related indicators in binary form. Using tabular analysis and weighted log-binomial regressions, we found that illiterate women exhibit a higher risk of tobacco use in association with some empowerment indicators. We conclude that some aspects of womens empowerment may have unexpected relationships with tobacco-use behaviors.
