Abstract: This paper presents a new classification scheme for looking at industrial structure in the United States, and explores patterns of growth related to this new classification scheme, with an eye towards examining the role of human and creative capital in the growth process. The paper begins with a background discussion that is intended to motivate the need for the development of a new industry classification scheme. This section is followed by a description of the process of developing this new industry classification scheme, a description of regional trends in the clusters developed in this paper, and then by a section that reports on correlates of regional growth and indicators of human and creative capital. The paper ends with some concluding comments.
