Abstract: . . . Although the census is indispensable for establishing long-run trends, it provides no evidence on short-run movements. For this purpose, the Current Population Survey (CPS) is taken every month. The CPS is a random sample with similar labor information to the census. The CPS began to be taken regularly after World War II. More recently, the Census Bureau has established the American Community Survey (ACS), which is taken on an annual basis, and is intended to supplement the decennial census. Other specialized surveys that are widely used to study labor force outcomes are the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) and the National Longitudinal Surveys (NLS). . .
