Abstract: This thesis is a community study of Kansas City in the 1920s as a city working to assume a prominent place within the emerging American market empire. It begins by exploring the role that men and women played in altering the worldview of the city, followed by an analysis of the way in which the topography of the city was altered to reflect the forces of empire. Methodologically it utilizes critical theory.
