Abstract: Primary care physicians, chiropractors, and physical therapists (PTs) all may potentially treat patients experiencing back and neck pain. In this paper, we examine how changes in chiropractic scope of practice and PT direct access to patients influence the wages of each practitioner. Our results suggest that expansions in chiropractic scope of practice increase average chiropractor wages. Our results also suggest that PT direct access to patients increases physician wages at the bottom of the wage distribution, but slightly reduces physician wages at the top of the wage distribution.
