Abstract: In this paper, we explore the voting behavior of naturalized U.S. citizens in the 2016 presidential election. Naturalized citizens constitute an increasingly important segment of the American electorate, due to growth in their numbers and their changing racial and ethnic composition. Using data from the 2016 CCES survey, we document differences in partisanship and voting behavior between the foreign-born and U.S.-born electorate, examine potential explanations for these differences, and then examine differences between the two groups in the salience of a number of different factors in determining voting behavior.
