Abstract: The rise of the gig economy is rooted in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis in the United States. Unable to maintain steady employment, Americans sought out additional sources of income to supplement a variety of alternative working arrangements. More than a decade after its conception, the platform economy has now grown substantially and accounts for nearly 15 percent of employment numbers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
