Title: Counting Nurses: The Power of Historical Census Data

Citation Type: Journal Article

Publication Year: 2009

Abstract: This study is the first systematic attempt to trace the demographic trajectory of professional nurses in the United States in the early 20th century. It also demonstrates the possibilities of using digital technologies to restructure the asking and answering of historical questions. The use of quantitative methods of social history has trans-national applications which can facilitate global investigations into the demographic composition of the nursing occupation.
