Abstract: According to the American Heart Association, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is not only the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in the United States, but it is also responsible for the highest health care costs for a single class of disease (1). The medical care that accompanies ASCVD often carries large per-capita medical expenditures (1), with an average annual out-of-pocket (OOP) spending of over $2,000, with almost one-half of direct expenditures being related to medication expenses (2). Even among those with health insurance, many people with ASCVD are inadequately protected from financial hardship due to the high costs of insurance, including deductible, copays, and coinsurances.
