Abstract: One of the most permanent features of the United States is racial and ethnic stratification. Race and ethnicity are important dimensions in understanding the demography of the United States, for racial and ethnic groups vary tremendously with respect to population composition, population processes, and their life chances and access to opportunity structures. This chapter focuses on the demography of racial and ethnic groups and consists of four main sections. First, the conceptualization, substantive concerns, and relevance of race and ethnicity to demography are examined. Second, we provide an overview of theoretical perspectives that have been used to understand racial and ethnic groups. Third, the methodological issues related to the study of race and ethnicity are discussed along with key empirical findings. Finally, directions for future research are discussed, and a few research areas that merit attention are highlighted.
