Abstract: Spatial science is a fast-growing field that studies spatiotemporal aspects of people, places, and processes using information technologies. It encompasses technologies ranging from satellite imaging and geographic information systems (GIS) to spatial data and models of data derived from social networks and fieldwork. Key research agencies—including the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health in the United States—have targeted spatial science for dramatically increased funding. Scientific bodies, including the U.S. National Academies and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, herald spatial science as an integrative approach and a research topic of vital importance to a wide array of disciplines encompassing Latin Americanists. Importantly, these agencies point to a need for better spatial science infrastructure, including physical systems centered on computing and communication as well as scientific data standards for archiving, discovery, and dissemination.
