Abstract: This article looks at modifying the currently reported CPI by the government to produce a "better" CPI. Comparisons are based on each alternative's ability to produce time series projections in line with measures reflecting consumer behavior. Suggested changes include restricting attention to goods with little change in the consumer experience over time as well as accounting for changes in the housing stock over time. The top performing CPI alternatives produce long run tends in income growth and poverty level reductions that indicate both have been understated by the official CPI.
