Abstract: Suburban schools have been undergoing rapid demographic changes in recent years with a sharp increase in the percentages of students from minority backgrounds. The growing number of students from disadvanatged economic backgrounds, single-parent families, and recently arrived non-English-speaking families have presented challenges to suburban schools. The growth in disparities in social and economic capital associated with ethnicity is illustrated in two very different suburban school districts in one New York County.
