Abstract: After being relatively stable from 1947 to 1980, household income inequality has steadily increased. Political commentary often blames bad lifestyle choices by the poor or the greediness of the rich. US Census micro data from 1980 to 2015 suggests that both assertions are wrong. The data indicates that the rise in income inequality for households is primarily due to changes in (1) household educational composition and educational payoffs and (2) spousal income.
