Abstract: The dissertation examines the trans-Pacific connections generated between China, Canada, and the United States through overseas Chinese schools in North America. It uses these learning institutions as a lens to investigate intergenerational differences and relationships, issues of nationalism, and changing gender roles in both China and North America during the early twentieth century.
