Abstract: This is a study of intergenerational mobility in the United States in the period 1880-1900. Following the lead of what we regard as seminal work in this area (Landale and Guest, 1990; Ferrie, 2005), we propose to examine the relationships among three dimensions of mobility: 1) occupational mobility, 2) domestic migration, and 3) generational shifts in nativity. The study is based on a linked file for men across 1880-1900 created by IPUMS.
