Abstract: Population surveys prospectively linked with the death records of respondents provide invaluable opportunities for the study of the relationship between social and economic circumstances and mortality outcomes. However, the methods for establishing vital status vary across data sources and this variation may influence the accuracy of their mortality estimates. We conduct the first study that systematically compares mortality estimates from multiple survey-linked mortality files with U.S. vital statistics data. Our results show that mortality rates and life expectancies in U.S. vital statistics data resemble those of the National Health Interview Survey Linked Mortality Files, Health and Retirement Study, and Americans’ Changing Lives study.
