Abstract: Having migrant origins is a central determinant of educational opportunities. Using 2001 and 2010 IPUMS census microdata, the objective of the article is to identify if there is an educational gap by migrant origin in Argentina, and how it varies according to the family educational and socioeconomic context. The analysis, which compares the children of South American immigrants with the children of Argentines, focuses on four indicators of school attendance and educational level. The results show that parental education interacts with migrant origins when explaining educational achievements: the role of parental education tends to be weaker among migrant-origin groups. This has implications for the educa-tional gap. In general, migrant-origin groups are advantaged over ‘native’ Argentines among those who have parents with low educational levels; conversely, they present no differences or are disadvantaged among those with parents of medi-um-high educational levels. Possible explanations are offered.
