Abstract: We investigate socioeconomic differences in Healthy Life Expectancy (HLE)− how many years an individual is expected to live in good health − for different educational groups in the United States, using repeated cross-sections from the National Health Interview Survey. We use a novel instrumental variable approach to test and address for potential endogeneity present in our linear additive explanatory model, which exploits the independence across different years in this dataset. Our results suggest that ignoring the potential endogeneity of included covariates in explaining health could result in misleading inferences about a sub-population's health and, subsequently, HLE.
