Abstract: Even as scholars, advocates, and policymakers contest the argument of Nathan Glazer and Daniel Moynihan that immigration constitutes “the single most important determinant of American foreign policy,”1 they hold little doubt that the recent era of globalization and transnational migration requires a broader, multiplayer framework for understanding the complexity of US relationships with other countries. The participation of Chinese Americans in transnational activities and US-China relations is a case in point. Their strong interest in this bilateral exchange offers a particularly vivid illustration of how and why immigrants, as individuals and as a community, care about US relations with their “old home.”
