Title: National Service and Beyond: A Panel Study of Tertiary Graduates in Ghana

Citation Type: Working Paper

Publication Year: 2016

Abstract: This study tracks a cohort of tertiary graduates in Ghana as they transition from schooling into the labor market. The baseline survey interviewed a sample of 2,036 national service personnel at the start of their national service. Key findings are that there is strong persistence in field of study between the secondary and tertiary level, suggesting that early interventions to address academic specialization could have lasting consequences. Additionally, science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) graduates have a stronger orientation toward the private sector than their peers, suggesting potential avenues for strengthening the match between graduate skills and labor market needs.
