Abstract: This paper examines the effect of New Jerseys Paid Family Leave Insurance (PFLI) on maternity leave taking. Using Current Population Survey Data and a difference-in-difference approach, I analyze the effect of New Jerseys PFLI. The findings suggest that the program did not significantly increase leave taking among most new mothers. Specifically, I find a 5.7-6.3 percentage point increase in leave taking for women with some college but no increases in leave taking for other groups.
