Abstract: The last place anyone would begin looking for the luckiest generation in U.S. history probably would be the depths of the Great Depression in the 1930s, but that is precisely where the Lucky Few first turn up. Low birth rates caused by hard times produced the first generation in the nation’s history with fewer people than the generation before them. In this chapter we concentrate on the Lucky Few when they were children, when home and family dominated their lives. We consider in particular the impact of economic depression and wartime on these childhoods, and then compare schooling for different generations.
