Abstract: This paper seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of price indices created with self reported housing values, rental prices, transaction prices, and assessed values using the methodology suggested by Sieg et al (2002). Data for this paper was obtained from SiteXdata and the Minnesota Population Centers IPUMS service. The initial findings of this paper support the assertion that top-coding and bracketing of data does little to affect the overall effectiveness of price indices. We additionally find evidence for a distinct possibility that all of these forms of data construct price indices with similar efficacy. In continuing our work we hope to compile strong evidence to support or refute these preliminary conclusions.
