Abstract: We show that three strike laws lead to worse intergenerational mobility for children aged eight to nine at implementation. The effects are focused in states that actually used their law. Our results complement the literature that examines the impact on the extensive margin (are parents incarcerated or not) since we show that the intensive margin (sentence length) matters also. Using several data sets and multiple measures of mobility from Chetty et al. (2014) we find worse income mobility and reduced college attendance for these children. Negative impacts on income and college attendance are also found using the American Community Survey.
