Abstract: This paper examines the effect of migrant diversity on households’ expenditure on food products. Using product attribute descriptions from the Nielsen Consumer Panel dataset and mapping it to a corpus of recipes, I calculate a region weighted expenditure share for each household. Exploiting variation in migrant settlement patterns across counties and country of origin, I find that a one percentage point increase in foreign-born share of a particular region is associated with a 0.28 percentage point increase in expenditure share on consumer packaged goods associated with that region. However, a negative relationship is observed among Asian countries. The findings are robust to various means of constructing the dataset, expenditure shares and choice of instruments.
