Abstract: Chronic childhood undernutrition, known as stunting, is a significant population health issue with short- and long-term adverse consequences. While Bangladesh has made substantial efforts to reduce chronic childhood undernutrition, progress falls short of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals targets. This study aims to estimate trends in age-specific chronic childhood undernutrition across Bangladesh's 64 districts from 1997 to 2018. We utilize direct estimates derived from seven Demographic and Health Surveys to develop small-area time-series models. These models integrate cross-sectional, temporal, and spatial data to provide predictions for all districts, both during survey years and non-survey years.Nationally, there has been a remarkable decline in stunting, with the prevalence dropping from approximately three out of five children to one out of three. Nevertheless, our findings underscore significant disparities in chronic undernutrition, as certain districts have experienced less substantial declines. These disparities are more intricate when examined at the district-by-age level, revealing that only districts in more socio-economically advantaged areas of Bangladesh consistently report declines in stunting across all age groups.
