Abstract: Urban regions in the United States have been disproportionately hit hard by COVID-19. We compare employment transitions between urban and rural workers during the pre-pandemic and the lockdown periods. We find that urban workers are more affected by this crisis. However, some urban workers, including young adults and minorities, are better off than their peers living in rural areas. Policymakers should account for these facts when designing financial stimulus.
